Lake Turkana Wind Power’s 2024 Sustainability Report Highlights Clean Energy Impact, Community Investment

Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP), Africa’s largest wind farm, has published its 2024 Sustainability Report, “Beyond Turbines: Impacting Kenya, Empowering People,” showcasing the project’s far-reaching contributions to Kenya’s energy transition, environmental protection, and socio-economic development.

According to the report, LTWP supplied 1,367 GWh of electricity to Kenya’s national grid in 2024, equivalent to 10.89% of the country’s total power consumption. Since its commissioning, the wind farm has delivered over 9.5 billion kWh, helping displace an estimated KSh 167 billion in fossil fuel imports.

In line with Kenya’s target of achieving 100% green energy by 2030, the project also recorded a significant reduction of 574,547 tonnes of carbon emissions in 2024 alone. LTWP further supported Kenya’s 30% tree cover initiative through reforestation and conservation efforts, including planting over 500 trees across its operation zone in Marsabit County.

Beyond clean energy, LTWP continues to demonstrate its commitment to community transformation. Through its non-profit arm, Winds of Change (WoC), the company has invested over KSh 875 million in health, education, and water access initiatives over the past six years. In 2024, highlights included the construction of new classrooms, a modern science lab, and a 46-bed male ward at Laisamis Hospital, serving more than 116,000 residents.

“Lake Turkana Wind Power is more than just a power plant—it’s a catalyst for sustainable development,” said George Njenga, LTWP Executive Chairman. “We’re not only powering homes and businesses, but also improving lives and supporting Kenya’s green agenda.”

The report also notes that 81% of LTWP’s 302 employees are from local communities, making it one of the largest private employers in Marsabit. In terms of workplace safety, the wind farm achieved 285 ‘Green Days’—days without any recordable incidents—reflecting a strong health, safety and environmental (HSE) culture.

Felix Rottmann, LTWP’s ESG Manager, emphasized that the report is a testament to LTWP’s commitment to environmental, social, and governance standards. “We are focused on measurable impact and continuous improvement to align with global ESG best practices,” he said.

Kenya Power Chairman Joy Brenda Mdivo praised the wind farm as a symbol of effective public-private collaboration: “Lake Turkana Wind Power exemplifies how strategic partnerships can deliver affordable, clean energy while driving real impact in local communities.”

As Kenya accelerates its push toward full green energy adoption by 2030, LTWP stands out as a blueprint for how renewable energy projects can drive both climate resilience and inclusive development.
