Proto Energy and OLA Join Forces on Clean Mobility

Proto Energy, through its OTO Gas brand, has partnered with OLA Energy to launch automotive Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) dispensing pumps.

The pilot phase, which kicked off today at the OLA Energy station in Buruburu, Nairobi, marks the beginning of a multi-site rollout aimed at providing motorists with cleaner and more affordable fuel alternatives.

The strategic partnership integrates LPG infrastructure into OLA Energy’s established retail network, making it easier for vehicles with dual-fuel systems, which can switch between LPG and petrol/diesel, to refuel.

The transport sector currently contributes an estimated 40–45% of urban air pollution in Kenya. By promoting Autogas, Proto Energy and OLA Energy are addressing a critical environmental challenge. Globally, over 27 million vehicles run on LPG, a fuel known to produce 15–20% lower CO₂ emissions than petrol and significantly less particulate matter than diesel.

Speaking at the launch, Joel Kamau, Managing Director of Proto Energy, emphasized that LPG is moving from a niche product to a mainstream solution.

“Our goal has always been to make cleaner, more affordable energy solutions practical and accessible,” said Mr. Kamau. “This partnership allows us to take OTO Gas closer to the everyday motorist by integrating LPG into a trusted retail environment.”

The initiative directly supports the Kenyan government’s National LPG Growth Strategy, which aims to increase LPG penetration to 70% by 2028.

“We are fully aligned with this vision,” Mr. Kamau added. “By investing in infrastructure, we are helping turn policy ambition into on-the-ground solutions that reduce emissions and support economic productivity.”

For OLA Energy, the collaboration is a key component of its transition toward sustainable energy retail. Mohamed Elhoderi, Managing Director of OLA Energy, noted that co-locating LPG pumps creates significant efficiencies.

“Leveraging our existing network allows us to introduce cleaner fuel solutions without requiring entirely new infrastructure,” said Mr. Elhoderi. “This model is commercially sound, scalable, and aligned with the future of energy retail in Kenya.”

Beyond the environmental benefits, the move is expected to be a major win for the pockets of Kenyan motorists. With household LPG usage already high (between 24–31% of Kenyan homes), the transition to automotive LPG leverages existing consumer trust.

The Buruburu launch serves as the first of several planned installations across Nairobi and beyond. As both companies scale this model, automotive LPG is positioned to become a practical “transition fuel” that delivers immediate cost savings while contributing to the nation’s long-term sustainability goals.
