MRM Commissions Solar Projects at Mariakani Plant
Mabati Rolling Mills (MRM), Kenya’s leading manufacturer of steel roofing and building solutions, has commissioned a landmark solar power project at its flagship Mariakani plant in Mombasa County.
The initiative marks a major milestone in MRM’s transition to renewable energy and reinforces its leadership in sustainable manufacturing across Africa. By integrating solar power into its largest production facility, MRM is reducing its carbon footprint, addressing climate change challenges, and advancing Kenya’s clean energy targets.
Albert Sigei, CEO of MRM, said, “This project reflects our long-term vision of embedding sustainability into our business model. It will directly support our corporate responsibility goals by generating more than 4,200 MWh of clean energy annually, avoiding over 200 tonnes of CO₂ emissions, and saving significant electricity costs.”
He added that the solar project aligns MRM’s operations with both Kenya’s sustainability agenda and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while also setting a precedent for responsible manufacturing across Africa.
The 2.9 MWp rooftop solar system, one of the largest in Kenya, was developed in partnership with GridX Africa, a clean energy financier, and executed by Orb Energy, a renewable energy solutions provider.
Ryan Dunn, CEO of GridX Africa, emphasized the importance of strategic financing in scaling renewable adoption “Our goal is to de-risk the adoption of renewable energy for businesses across Africa. This project shows how smart investment can unlock both environmental and economic benefits.”
Orb Energy Co-founder and CEO Damian Miller added, “We are proud to have designed, supplied, and installed MRM’s first rooftop solar system, one of the largest of its kind in Kenya. This highlights the vast potential of solar energy in the region.”
With this milestone, MRM cements its role as a thought leader in Africa’s green transition, demonstrating how industry can drive climate action while ensuring high-quality, low-impact production.
